ABSTRACT

Abstract The present study aimed to evaluate the diet of the free-living crab-eating fox by identifying the stomach contents of the 17 crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous) roadkilled in two conservation units, both located in the Amazon rainforest. The food items were quantified by frequency of occurrence (FO) and percentage of occurrence (PO). The stomach contents were analysed for dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude fibre (CF), ether extract (EE), and mineral matter (MM). Nitrogen-free extractives (NFE), metabolisable energy (ME) values, as well as the energy need for maintenance were estimated. The composition of the diet for the crab-eating fox presented 29 food items from the different taxonomic groups, with a greater diversity of items of animal origin (n=22), although the highest frequency of occurrence was gramineae (Poaceae) (41.18%). Among the items of animal origin, 21% were mammals, 18% reptiles, 10% amphibians, 9% invertebrates and 3% birds. A high content of CF (62.76%) were determined. Nitrogen-free extractive and dry matter averages were 5.91% and 141.82 kcal/100g, respectively. The average maintenance energy was 447.01 kcal/day. These findings suggesting that the crab-eating foxes have a generalist diet with an omnivorous diet in the Amazon basin, feeding on gramineae, fruits, insects, snakes, amphibians, birds and small mammals and have the same feeding habit that present in other Brazilian biomes.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Combining ability analysis provides useful information for the selection of parents, also information regarding the nature and magnitude of involved gene actions. Crops improvement involves strategies for enhancing yield potentiality and quality components. Targeting the improvement of respective characters in bitter gourd, combining ability and genetic parameters for 19 characters were estimated from a 6×6 full diallel analysis technique. The results revealed that the variances due to general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were highly significant for most of the important characters. It indicated the importance of both additive and non-additive gene actions. GCA variances were higher in magnitude than SCA variances for all the characters studied indicating the predominance of the additive gene effects in their inheritance. The parent P2 (BG 009) appeared as the best general combiner for earliness; P1 (BG 006) for number of fruits, average single fruit weight and fruit yield; P4 (BG 027) for node number of first female flower and days to seed fruit maturity; P3 (BG 011) for fruit length and thickness of the fruit flesh; P5 (BG 033) for 100-seed weight; and P6 for number of nodes per main vine. The SCA effect as well as reciprocal effect was also significant for most of the important characters in different crosses.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Traumatized bone tissue has the capacity to repair itself so that it eventually regains its almost original form, even in the case of artificially inserted implants. The process that stays at the base of the regeneration is represented by osteogenesis or remote osteogenesis. The major difference between the two types of bone formation is the location of the cement line, which is located on the surface of the implant for contact osteogenesis and on the surface of the bone defect for remote osteogenesis. The aim of the present study was to assess the contact osteogenesis in the case of inserted titanium screws in holes with diameters of 1.8 mm and 1 mm respectively. The obtained results show, in the case of the groove with 1.8 mm that the newly proliferated bone represents 73.85 % of the total area, while in the case of the groove with 1 mm in diameter the value of the newly proliferated bone is 26.15 %. In conclusion, the insertion of titanium screws by self-tapping into the hole smaller than the core of the screw is accompanied by bone proliferation by contact osteogenesis much more modest than in the case of insertion into the hole larger than the core of the screw.

ABSTRACT

Background: Formative assessment (FA) is part of the assessment process according to the new competency based medical education curriculum and is believed to improve learning. Feedback from students is an integral part of FA which, if incorporated, may help in optimizing content and application of future FAs. Hence, the current study was conducted to assess feedback from 2nd year medical students regarding FAs in Pharmacology. Aim and Objectives: The objectives of the study were to assess the emotional impact of FA on students and to analyze their suggestions regarding FA. Materials and Methods: A well-designed, structured, and pre-validated questionnaire was filled by consenting students who had written the FA. The responses were compiled in an excel sheet and statistically analyzed. Results: Out of 121 students, 115 took FA and of them 100 students filled the questionnaire (Response rate 86.95%). When it comes to emotional impact, 64% students did not find these assessments burdensome and 81% were motivated to study better. When it comes to future suggestions, 100% wanted to be pre-informed. About 88% wanted a written assessment. About 75% wanted only multiple choices questions (MCQs) and 70% wanted MCQs + Essay type questions. About 65% students wanted FAs in practicals but only 36% wanted it in the same paper as theory FA. Conclusion: FA is a good tool to enhance learning which is not a burden on students but a good motivator for better reading. Students prefer a pre-informed, written assessment with MCQs over essay type questions and want these FAs to be conducted in practical’s also but not in the same paper.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aimed to assess and compare the changes in peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in nondiabetics and diabetics with various stages of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Methods: The study subjects were divided into four groups based on their diabetic status and findings, namely, controls (normal subjects without diabetes [NDM]), diabetics without retinopathy (NDR), nonproliferative DR (NPDR), and proliferative DR (PDR). Peripapillary RNFL thickness was assessed using optical coherence tomography. One?way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the post?Tukey HSD test was done to compare RNFL thickness in different groups. The Pearson coefficient was used to determine the correlation. Results: There was statistically significant difference in measured average RNFL (F = 14.8000, P < 0.05), superior RNFL (F = 11.7768, P < 0.05), inferior RNFL (F = 12.9639, P < 0.05), nasal RNFL (F = 12.2134, P < 0.05), and temporal RNFL (F = 4.2668, P < 0.05) across the different study groups. Pairwise comparison showed that there was a statistically significant difference in RNFL measured (average and all quadrants) in patients with DR (NPDR and PDR) and the NDM control group (P < 0.05). In diabetics without retinopathy, the RNFL measured was reduced compared to controls, but it was statistically significant only in the superior quadrant (P < 0.05). Average RNFL and RNFL in all quadrants showed a small negative correlation with the severity of DR and it was statistically significant (P < 0.001). Conclusion: In our study, peripapillary RNFL thickness was reduced in diabetic retinopathy compared to normal controls and the thinning increased with the severity of DR. This was evident in the superior quadrant even before the fundus signs of DR set in

ABSTRACT

Nucleotide excision repair (NER) acts repairing damages in DNA, such as lesions caused by cisplatin. Xeroderma Pigmentosum complementation group C (XPC) protein is involved in recognition of global genome DNA damages during NER (GG-NER) and it has been studied in different organisms due to its importance in other cellular processes. In this work, we studied NER proteins in Trypanosoma cruzi and Trypanosoma evansi, parasites of humans and animals respectively. We performed three-dimensional models of XPC proteins from T. cruzi and T. evansi and observed few structural differences between these proteins. In our tests, insertion of XPC gene from T. evansi (TevXPC) in T. cruzi resulted in slower cell growth under normal conditions. After cisplatin treatment, T. cruzi overexpressing its own XPC gene (TcXPC) was able to recover cell division rates faster than T. cruzi expressing TevXPC gene. Based on these tests, it is suggested that TevXPC (being an exogenous protein in T. cruzi) interferes negatively in cellular processes where TcXPC (the endogenous protein) is involved. This probably occurred due interaction of TevXPC with some endogenous molecules or proteins from T. cruzi but incapacity of interaction with others. This reinforces the importance of correctly XPC functioning within the cell.

ABSTRACT

The essential oil of citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus) has several biological activities, among them the insect repellent action. Some studies showed that cinnamic acid esters can be applied as natural pesticides, insecticides and fungicides. In this context, the objective of the present work was to evaluate the production of esters from citronella essential oil with cinnamic acid via enzymatic esterification. Besides, the essential oil toxicity before and after esterification against Artemia salina and larvicidal action on Aedes aegypti was investigated. Esters were produced using cinnamic acid as the acylating agent and citronella essential oil (3:1) in heptane and 15 wt% NS 88011 enzyme as biocatalysts, at 70 °C and 150 rpm. Conversion rates of citronellyl and geranyl cinnamates were 58.7 and 69.0% for NS 88011, respectively. For the toxicity to Artemia salina LC50 results of 5.29 μg mL-¹ were obtained for the essential oil and 4.36 μg mL-¹ for the esterified oils obtained with NS 88011. In the insecticidal activity against Aedes aegypti larvae, was obtained LC50 of 111.84 μg mL-¹ for the essential oil of citronella and 86.30 μg mL-¹ for the esterified oils obtained with the enzyme NS 88011, indicating high toxicity of the esters. The results demonstrated that the evaluated samples present potential of application as bioinsecticide.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Nucleotide excision repair (NER) acts repairing damages in DNA, such as lesions caused by cisplatin. This probably occurred due interaction of TevXPC with some endogenous molecules or proteins from T.cruzi but incapacity of interaction with others. This reinforces the importance of correctly XPC functioning within the cell.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The essential oil of citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus) has several biological activities, among them the insect repellent action. For the toxicity to Artemia salina LC50 results of 5.29 μg mL-1 were obtained for the essential oil and 4.36 μg mL-1 for the esterified oils obtained with NS 88011. In the insecticidal activity against Aedes aegypti larvae, was obtained LC50 of 111.84 μg mL-1 for the essential oil of citronella and 86.30 μg mL-1 for the esterified oils obtained with the enzyme NS 88011, indicating high toxicity of the esters. ABSTRACT

Multiple sclerosis (MS), a neuroinflammation that results in neurodegeneration, is the most prevalent central nervous system inflammatory disease in young people. A diet rich in antioxidants is known to decrease the production/activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines and have a positive impact on the prognosis of MS. The purpose of this study was to assess if dietary antioxidant capacity is related to Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores in patients with MS. Patients with MS (n=220; 137 women and 83 men) were asked to complete a questionnaire on diet. According to the EDSS score, patients were split into two groups (group 1: EDSS ≤5 and group 2: EDSS >5). Analyzed risk variables were antioxidant levels and demographic data. A nutritional database tool (BeBiS 4 software, Germany) created for the evaluation of Turkish foods was used to examine the questionnaire findings. Age, vitamin A, retinol, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin C were significantly different between groups (P<0.05). The levels of vitamins A, D, E, C, and retinol were significantly correlated, according to Pearson's correlation analysis. Receiver operator characteristic curve analysis revealed that vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin C levels were discriminating variables in group 2 patients (EDSS >5). The current study has shown that antioxidant levels obtained by EDSS may be useful in determining illness severity and treatment success of patients with MS. Further clinical trials have been initiated in MS patients with more effective antioxidants.

ABSTRACT

The methods adopted to preserve fish can affect its nutritional quality owing to the likelihood of deposition of chemical and biological agents, which can also be injurious to health upon consumption. This study aimed to assess the impact of these preservation methods on the health of the people of Sampou. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among people of Sampou, aged between 15-60 years. Data were collected from 364 respondents using interview and self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The study shows that smoking is the most common method of fish preservation in Sampou because it's easily accessible. Result of the study also revealed that fish preservation methods have health implications, such as burns, eye irritation, cough, asthma exacerbation, bronchitis, fever and chest pain. Although, smoking tends to prolong the shelf life of the fish it impacts adversely on health. It was recommended that farmers should seek support to build a solar powered cold room storage in Sampou, while the government should provide funds which will help fish farmers get better equipment. Medical officers and other healthcare workers should encourage regular medical screening and check up for fish farmers.

ABSTRACT

Manual small-incision cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures in ophthalmology. Most cataract surgeries are performed under local anaesthesia. Peribulbar or retrobulbar anaesthesia is commonly used to achieve analgesia and akinesia during surgery but it has various complications. Our aim was to study patient comfort and surgeon抯 perspective in terms of patient cooperation in MSICS under topical anaesthesia using only proparacaine 0.5% eye drops without any periocular block or intracameral drug. Also to popularise Topical MSICS similar to Topical Phacoemulsification. A prospective analytical study of 33 patients who underwent MSICS surgery from March 2022 to June 2022 using Topical proparacaine eye drops 0.5% was done and patient抯 comfort and surgeon抯 perspective in terms of patient cooperation was studied on a scale of 1-5. Out of 33 patients who underwent surgery, the average comfort score based on patient feedback was 3.45 0.96 and average patient cooperation score based on surgeon assessment was 3.42 1.07 on a scale of 1-5. We concluded that MSICS using only topical proparacaine 0.5% eye drops, can provide sufficient patient comfort and can avoid complications related to peribulbar anaesthesia. Hence it can be used in large scale cataract surgeries and also provides economical utilisation of resources, lesser complications and early post operative recovery without compromising surgical outcome.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction Early carcinomas of the oral cavity in the posterior-inferior regions poses a challenge for reconstruction due to the lack of muscle support underneath and the limited space available to use some of the frequently-used flaps. Objective This study was done to evaluate the efficacy of the superiorly based masseter muscle flap in reconstruction of intra-oral post- ablation defects in patients with early oral carcinoma of the posterior-inferior part of the oral cavity. Methods A superiorly based masseter muscle flap were used to reconstruct the post-surgical intra- oral defect in 60 patients with early squamous cell carcinoma (T < 4 cm) of the posterior-inferior part of the oral cavity. The patients were followed up at 1-week and 1-month postoperatively to check for flap viability, complications, change in mouth opening and deviation of the mandible on mouth opening. To rule out any recurrence in the oral cavity masseter flaps, the patients were followed up for 1 year. Results The flap was viable in all patients and underwent mucosalization. 7/60 patients had postoperative infections, while 2/60 patients developed an oro-cutaneous fistula which required a secondary corrective procedure. The mean ± standard deviation of change in mouth opening at 1 week postoperatively was +1.917 ± 3.36 mm, which increased to +2.633 ± 2.95 mm at 1 month after surgery. The Friedman test revealed that there was a statistically significant change in mouth opening from preoperative period to the1 week and 1 month postoperative periods (p = 0.000). Female patients showed better improvement in mouth opening postoperatively. The ipsilateral deviation of the mandible on mouth opening was between 0-5 mm in 39 patients, 5-10 mm in 17 patients and more than 10 mm in 4 patients. There were no recurrences noted in the masseter flaps used. Conclusion The study infers that the superiorly based masseter muscle flap is a reliable method for reconstruction in early oral cancer patients yielding good functional results and acceptable cosmesis with nominal postoperative complications.

ABSTRACT

An experiment was conducted to assess the effect of natural antioxidants (black pepper, green tea, roselle and their combinations) on meat quality of broiler chickens. A total of 270 1 - day old Arbor Acre broiler chicks were randomly distributed into nine treatments of three replicates each (10 birds in each replicate) in a 2 x 5 factorial arrangement for 2 inclusion levels (0.5g and 1.0g per kg of feed) of natural antioxidants (Control (CT), Green tea (GT), Roselle (RS), Black pepper (BP) and combination (CM) of the 3 antioxidants). At the end of the feeding trial (at 8 weeks), nine birds per treatment were immobilized, slaughtered, dressed, weighed and cut into primal cuts. The growth (initial and final body weight gain, average daily feed intake and weight gain, and feed conversion) and blood assay (haematology and serum biochemistry) of the birds were monitored while the breast and thigh meat cuts were subjected to physico-chemical and sensory analysis. The result indicated that, among examined natural antioxidants, BP improved the bird抯 live weight. High Density Lipoprotein value was highest (p<0.05) in control and closely followed by birds on GT, CM, BP and RS. The lowest blood (p<0.05) cholesterol was recorded in RS which was closely followed by GT and CM. Carcass evaluation showed that birds fed BP had better (p<0.05) live weight (2.05kg) and highest acceptability (p<0.05) for organoleptic properties. The breast meat weight was also highest (p<0.05) in BP. It was concluded that the natural antioxidants increased live weight, improved performance and reduced abdominal fat. RS reduced blood cholesterol while RS, CM (GT + RS + BP) inclusion improved serum total protein of broiler chickens. Inclusion of natural antioxidant in the diets of broiler is hereby advocated for achieving optimum broilers performance and meat quality.
